As Dr. Musharbash states, caring for your oral hygiene is not only for having a nice breath and shiny teeth. Just like any part of your body that needs care, your teeth and gums are very important. Gum disease starts with inflammation in the gum.
If it’s not treated, it will lead to the destruction of the tissues around the teeth, eventually leading to tooth loss. One of the most important gum diseases is periodontitis. It’s a chronic inflammation of the gums caused by bacterial microorganisms. Other than tooth loss, it can cause several other health problems like cardiovascular diseases.
How do I identify periodontitis?
As Dr. Musharbash states, the symptoms of periodontitis are mainly as follows:
- Bleeding gums during brushing
- Redness and swollen gums
- Gum recession, tender gums
- Formation of deep pockets
- Tooth loss
But, what is the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis?
Periodontitis always starts with inflamed gums. This first stage is called gingivitis. Dr. Musharbash affirms that gingivitis always comes before periodontitis but does not necessarily progress into periodontitis.
Dr. Musharbash explains that in the early stage, bacteria or plaque build-up causes irritation in the gums and becomes swollen or red and bleed during brushing. The teeth are normal and healthy in the socket, with no bone or tissue damage. When it progresses into periodontitis, we start having deep pockest with pathogenic bacteria that destroy the bone supporting the teeth. These small spaces become infected as the plaque spreads below the gum line, then starts breaking down the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth, leading to tooth loss.
How you can prevent periodontitis
Dr. Musharbash gives you tips on how to prevent periodontitis. He stresses on the importance of good oral hygiene. Brushing your teeth twice a day for 3 minutes, flossing once a day and using anti-plaque mouthwash like Eludril Care, is quite important. In addition to proper oral care, regular dental visits are important. Dr. Musharbash recommends seeing your dentist regularly (every 6 to 12 months) for proper dental cleaning.
