Over the years, there has been a lot of research debating whether oral health is a possible cause of heart disease. However, there is no proof yet that it could be a cause or that it could prevent heart disease at all. However, studies have shown several ways the two of them are linked.
Will good oral health help prevent heart disease?
Over the years spent studying the link between oral health and heart disease, studies have shown that:
- Periodontitis (gum disease) is often associated with a bigger risk of developing heart disease.
- Poor oral hygiene and health increases the risk of a bacterial infection in the bloodstream, which can affect the heart valves. People with artificial heart valves should especially pay attention to their oral health.
- Tooth loss patterns are connected to coronary artery disease.
- There is a strong connection between diabetes and cardiovascular disease and evidence that people with diabetes benefit from periodontal treatment.
The importance of caring for your teeth and gums
Oral health is not a cause of heart disease, but it can play a role in its prevention (just as the prevention of your overall health deterioration). As we all know by now, it is very important to care well for your teeth and gums, by:
- Brushing your teeth at least twice a day.
- Flossing daily.
- Scheduling regular dental checkups and cleanings.
